No matter how organized you think you are when moving, there are always essential items you can never find once you move into your new home. Each room should have a priority box that holds the essential items for that room. This should be the first box opened in each room as you unpack. It is also great to have a priority box filled with tools. These are key tools that you will need to use to put together furniture, hang pictures, install appliances or make small repairs in your new home.

Here is a list of the items that should be in your tool priority box:

Utility knife
Hammer
Flat-head screwdriver
Phillips-head screwdriver
Tape measure
Duct tape
Flashlight
Level
Picture hangers

SMART Tips – The Art of Packing a Box

Filed under: General Moving Tips, Long Distance Moving, Residential Moving Tips — SMARTBOX @ 11:48 am

At SMARTBOX we know that there really is a right and a wrong way to pack a box. Because we don’t want you to learn the hard way, here are a few SMART tips for packing your moving boxes:

The bottom of the box should be lined with a few layers of paper creating a cushion for the contents.

Wrap all fragile items with multiple sheets of packing material.

Do not overload boxes; boxes should never weigh over 50 pounds.

Heavier items should be placed at the bottom of the box with lighter items at the top.

When at all possible, pack similar items together.

Stuff socks, scarves, and other small fabric items in the boxes to fill the holes.

Small, loose items should be boxed or bagged and sealed securely before being placed into a larger box.

Make sure all boxes close properly with the tops sealed flat. Don’t over pack the box; you risk damaging the contents.

Label each box with a permanent marker with information identifying contents, room location, and if the contents are fragile.

Whether you are making a long distance move or just moving across town, it is important to pack your boxes properly to reduce any possible damage.

SMART Tips – The Moving Sale

Filed under: General, General Moving Tips, Residential Moving Tips — SMARTBOX @ 10:41 am

You are about to move and need to start packing all of those boxes. What a great time to decide what you will keep and what you should get rid of. A moving sale is a great way to lighten your load and put a few bucks in your wallet. Remember, one person’s junk is another person’s treasure.

Here are a few tips from SMARTBOX for a successful moving sale:

1.Saturdays are usually the best day to have your sale; avoid holiday weekends.
2.Publicize your sale. Place an ad in the paper; pass out flyers; put up signs.
3.Put the price sticker in an easy-to-see location.
4.Start saving bags. Have tissue paper or newspaper on hand to wrap breakable items.
5.Keep all sets together. Store loose game pieces in a small bag and secure inside the box.
6.Display items together in groups such as sporting equipment and books. Hang clothing on a clothesline or rack for easy access.
7.Set up a cashier’s station with a cash box and plenty of change. Have on hand a calculator, scissors, tape, and markers.
8.When the sale is over, donate the remaining items.
