SMART Tips: Packing Up The Laundry Room

Filed under: General Moving Tips, Residential Moving Tips — SMARTBOX @ 3:06 pm

We just recently talked about how to safely move your washer and dryer, but wait a minute, we are not finished with the laundry room yet. Do you have a closet that opens up with a washer and dryer and a shelf for cleaning supplies? Or do you have a big room that serves as laundry room, pantry, sewing room, gift wrapping center, and maybe even your office? At SMARTBOX, we have a few tips to make moving this room of assorted purposes just a bit easier.

Box up all of your cleaning solutions together. Do not put these in your SMARTBOX. It is best to transport your household cleaning solutions in your car when you move. Next start organizing your room by subject matter: all kitchen items together, all gift wrapping supplies in a box, all craft supplies in another box.

I have found from personal experience that when you move from one house to another, in many cases, these items get dispersed a little differently. Maybe your kitchen has a huge walk in pantry and you no longer need to store extra kitchen equipment in the laundry room. Did you get the real office of your dreams in your new home? Yes, those items will go to a different room too.

Packing up the laundry room will probably take just a little extra organization on the packing side, but if you take the time to organize and pack it by its different functions, it will make it so much easier when you move into your new home.

SMART Tips: Moving Your Washer and Dryer

Filed under: General Moving Tips, Residential Moving Tips — SMARTBOX @ 12:28 pm

Moving appliances is certainly not the fun part of moving, but with a little know-how and the right equipment it can easily be mastered. Here are a few tips from SMARTBOX to help you safely move your washer and dryer:

Step One: Rent or borrow an appliance dolly or a hand truck. This will make this task easier and safer.

Step Two: Moving Your Washer:

1.  Make sure you turn off the water leading into the washing machine.

2.  In order to release pressure from the hoses, turn the warm water on in the washer for 30 seconds. You will need to let the water drain and then turn it off.

3.  At this time, unhook the hoses from the back of the washer. Store them inside the washing machine.

4. Unplug the washer from the outlet and disconnect the drain hose from the wall pipe. Using tape, secure both of these to the back.

5.  This step will take two people. Being very careful, slide the washer onto the dolly. For extra support, secure the appliance to the dolly frame with a bungee cord.

Step Three: Moving Your Dryer

1. Remove the metallic vent hose from the back of the dryer. Store the hose inside the dryer. This is the best way to have everything together when you need to hook it back up in your new home.

2. If you have an electric dryer, unplug it, and secure the cord to the back of the unit with tape. If you have a gas dryer, then turn off the gas first, then secure your cords to the back with tape.

3. This step will take two people. Carefully slide the dryer onto the appliance dolly and, again, secure it with a bungee cord.

SMART Tips: Safety When Moving – What NOT to Put In a SMARTBOX

Filed under: General Moving Tips, Residential Moving Tips — SMARTBOX @ 10:50 am

No matter how organized you seem to be in the moving process, at some point you reach crunch time and you feel like everything just gets dumped in a box and thrown into the SMARTBOX container. For your safety, there are some items that should not be packed in your portable moving container.

Locate these items early in the moving process and either toss them out or store them somewhere safe where you can easily locate them. The following items should be thrown out or carefully packed and moved in your car:

Flammable or Dangerous Materials
Aerosol Cans
Agricultural Products
Oil Based Paint or Lacquers
Toxic Chemicals
Alcoholic Beverages or Food Products

These items should be kept together and packed in your car so that you you know at all times where they are:

Pharmaceuticals
Irreplaceable items
Jewelry
Money, Deeds, Stock
Valuable Documents
