Moving? Pack Your Belongings Ahead of Time!

Filed under: General Moving Tips, Residential Moving Tips — admin @ 1:19 pm

There are a few simple things you can do to make moving a far smoother process. One of the most important things to do is to manage your time wisely. This is where packing ahead of time becomes important.

Create a time frame as to when you will be able to pack certain groups of items in your home. For the most part, almost everything can be packed away as long as enough is left out for what you will need, such as clothes, food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.

There may be entire rooms in your home that can be packed up days before you move. Alternatively, you may need access to most of your things right up until moving day, perhaps for business purposes. If so, go through closets, storage areas, and cabinets. Get all that stuff that you don’t use daily.

Going through your things in advance also gives you a good opportunity to clear out the things you will not want to bring with you. It gives you a better idea of how much stuff you need to get rid of. You may decide to have a garage sale before you move due to the amount of things you want to divest yourself of.

Pack up all your decorations ahead of time, as well. Pictures, vases, statuettes, and other such items can all be packed away with no problem.

Pack up any movies you will not want to watch, books you are not reading, and music you will not need until after the move.

Remember, the more you pack prior to moving day, the easier your moving day will be!

Sell Your Stuff Before You Move

Filed under: Residential Moving Tips — admin @ 12:35 pm

Hosting a garage sale is an excellent way to get rid of your unwanted stuff, and make some money doing it! It is also a great way to make your move easier, by lightening your load.

If you don’t have enough stuff in your “garage sale pile”, go back through your things several more times. Really think about what you need and what you are just hanging on to. Chances are, if you haven’t used something before you moved, you still won’t use it after you move.

Also, be sure to consider the area your moving to. There is obviously no more need for your old snow-blower if you are moving to Florida, but there may also be more subtle examples that you have not thought of, as well.

Hold your garage sale on a day when the weather will cooperate. Saturdays are the best days for garage sales and attract the most browsers. Advertising your garage sale in the newspaper and/or with signs is a great way of attracting business.

Well, I hope your garage sale is successful and makes the move easier!

Five Most Important Packing Supplies

Moving can be a hassle, however there are a few things you can do to help ensure your moving experience is as easy as possible. One of the most important things you can do, is to make sure you are prepared for the move before it is time to go.

Abraham Maslow once said, “ If the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail.” Having the proper tools is essential to making your move easy. What tools? I’m talking about packing supplies.

Having the proper packing supplies on hand will save you time, energy, and stress. Here is a list of packing supplies that you should have before you even think about starting to pack anything:

  • Boxes- Yes, I know- that’s obvious. But having the proper size boxes and number of boxes is the important thing. Boxes are available from many places. A lot of business will give you extra empty boxes if you ask. Also, there are a wide variety of boxes for sale at packing/shipping services, home improvement and department stores, post offices, etc. Be sure to get different sized boxes. Large ones for light, bulky objects, and small ones for heavier items like books.
  • Tape- Buy some good-quality packing tape. Depending on the amount of packing you need to do, you may need several rolls. For even small homes or apartments, one roll of tape is almost never enough.
  • Packing Material- Save old newspapers for a few weeks before your move. Newspapers make good packing material for most household items. The more delicate and valuable items in your home do require a little more than newspaper, though. Bubble wrap, foam peanuts, and blankets provide excellent protection for items you don’t want damaged.
  • Labels- These are optional, but if you won’t be able to write directly onto your packing containers, or if you can’t see what you wrote, you may want to buy or make some labels. Clearly labeled boxes make organization and unpacking easier.
  • Box-cutter- Be sure you have a good knife to unpack your stuff.

A little planning goes a long way. Make sure you are actually ready to pack your stuff before you get knee deep in it and find out you need to go to the store.

  • If possible, pack your computer in its original container. This is the best way to prevent your computer from becoming damaged.
  • If the original containers are not available, use good, sturdy boxes that won’t collapse or rip when you handle them.
  • Use plenty of packing material and wrap your monitor with bubble wrap or something similar. Stuffing small pillows and such into gaps also works well.

How to Pack Your Household Items: Mirrors

Filed under: Residential Moving Tips — admin @ 9:31 am

Mirrors are very delicate and must be handled with the utmost care when packing to be moved or stored. Here is some advice:

  • Wrap the mirror with a generous amount of paper or other packing material. Thick blankets work well for this.
  • Boxes are available for specifically packing mirrors. If you can’t find any, or don’t want to buy them, break down an old cardboard box and wrap the mirror with it. Tape the sides to prevent the cardboard from coming off.
  • Always stand your mirror up in the moving truck and/or storage container. Never place mirrors flat on anything, as this is a sure way to break it.
  • Try and place your mirrors someplace safe on the moving truck or storage unit, such as against a wall. Storing them between mattress or box springs is a good idea.

Follow these tips and work carefully when handling mirrors, and you shouldn’t have a problem moving or storing them.

How To Pack Your Household Items: Clothing

Filed under: Residential Moving Tips — admin @ 2:19 pm

Clothing is one of the easier items to pack up for a move or storage. Still, you don’t want to get any of your clothes ruined when packing them up. Here are a few tips to make packing your clothes easier:

  • Wardrobe boxes are an excellent solution for packing clothing. Wardrobe boxes typically have a rod on the top of the box, on which clothes can be hanged.
  • Pack all your loose articles in bags, such as shoes, socks, undergarments, etc. If the wardrobe boxes are big enough, these bags can be stored at the bottom, beneath the hanging clothes. This helps conserve space.
  • Your dresser drawers can also be used to pack your clothes in. If this is what you decide to do, take the drawers out of the dresser and move separately. This makes the dresser much lighter and easier to handle during the move.
  • Remember, too many clothes in one container can make it too heavy very quickly. Use several smaller boxes, rather than one large one. Large cardboard boxes have a tendency to rip and collapse when over packed with too many clothes.
  • Don’t stack any other boxes on top of those with clothing in them. This may crush the box and damage your clothes.

Follow these tips and your clothing will be safe during your move. If storing your clothes, remember to keep them in a dry, cool place. Avoid storing them anywhere that bugs and moisture can damage your clothing.
