SMART Tips: Shipping Your Car
There are so many things to consider when your family makes a long distance move. One detail that must be dealt with is moving your car. You probably have more than one car, and would like to travel in one car together while the other car is being moved. At SMARTBOX, we understand that moving long distance can be stressful for you and your family. In addition to our long distance moving services, we also offer some tips when shipping your car long distance:
Price – The price will vary greatly depending on depend on the original location and the distance to the destination, the type of automobile and any special options you request.
Time - It can take one to two weeks or even longer for a coast-to-coast move, depending on how remote an area you need it delivered to.
Insurance – Carefully read the insurance coverage provided by your transporter. Make sure you understand whether there are any deductibles for damage and whether the carrier insurance provided by the transporter is primary or secondary to your own vehicle insurance.
Personal Items – While it is tempting to load your car up with boxes, it is not a good idea. You will make the car heavier which will cost you more to ship and it is more susceptible to damage. Any damage or theft of the items inside will not be covered under your cargo insurance.
Preparing the car – Remove any loose parts from the vehicle. Leave a window cracked open to avoid pressure and heat build up during any elevation and temperature changes.
Vehicle Pickup - Ask for an inspection report when the transporter picks up the car. Check for accuracy and be sure to save the report so you can prove any damage to the car during shipment.
Vehicle Delivery - When receiving your car, inspect it carefully during the daylight. If you notice a problem after the driver leaves, you will not have any recourse.
